Next up on the renowned Agnostik Era imprint comes the Acoustiq Contrast EP from long-standing signee Billy S. – a captivating four-track selection of unfettered club cuts.
Active since 2008, the Swiss DJ/producer initially made strides on underground Berlin labels Splatterkore and Cathartic Noize Experience (CH) before inking a deal with local Lausanne label Nekrolog1k. Today doubling up as its co-manager as well as one third of production crew Future Dynamics alongside the ERID brothers, Billy has thoroughly earned his stripes within the European hardcore scene, amassing a loyal following thanks to his leftfield concoctions.
Drawing on discernible influences from techno and ambient music and decorated with harsh lashings of white noise, the Acoustiq Contrast EP is a thoroughly atmospheric affair from the outset. Opener “Initial Contrast” utilises knocking kicks, warped synths and clanking percussion which work their way up to heady crescendos, its intoxicating rhythms taking on a hypnotic quality. “Raw Contrast”, meanwhile, is a comparatively stripped-back number, contrasting its brutal, cinematic drum work with dubby delays and staccato bleeps.
“Deep Contrast” is markedly different still, its incessantly crunchy sound design and unrelenting four-to-the-floor kicks making it perhaps the heaviest creation on the EP and undoubtedly a firm favourite for some listeners. Concluding the project is “Drum Contrast”, a sprawling track juxtaposing tranquil, drawn-out leads with bustling percs and chirping FX with wholly experimental results—as can be expected from this genre-bending innovator.
